New England Ledger welcomes original columns from residents, organizers, researchers, business owners, public servants, students and people with firsthand experience of the issues shaping our region.

What we are looking for

Strong submissions should:

  • Address an issue affecting New England
  • Present a clear argument or insight
  • Draw on evidence, experience or specialized knowledge
  • Explain why the issue matters now
  • Offer readers something they are unlikely to find elsewhere

Submission guidelines

  • Recommended length: 700–1,200 words
  • Submissions must be original and factually supportable.
  • Include links or citations for factual claims.
  • Disclose relevant financial, political, organizational or personal relationships.
  • Identify any use of generative AI in drafting or research.
  • Do not submit defamatory, plagiarized or discriminatory material.
  • Submission does not guarantee publication.
  • NEL may edit accepted pieces for clarity, accuracy, length and style.
  • Publication will occur only after the writer approves the edited version and agrees to NEL’s contributor terms.
